Backup and Recovery

Backups that are tested, not just scheduled.

Servers, workstations and Microsoft 365 backed up on a schedule, checked regularly, and restorable when it matters. For businesses across Winnipeg, Winkler, Steinbach, Brandon and Manitoba that would rather not find out the hard way.

A backup only counts if you can restore from it. Costwise sets up backups for the places your data actually lives: file servers, line of business applications, staff computers, and Microsoft 365 itself, which Microsoft does not back up for you in the way most owners assume. Copies are kept locally for fast restores and offsite for the day the office is the problem.

Then we test. Restores are run on a schedule, not just when something has gone wrong, and the results are written down. You get a plain statement of what is protected, how far back it goes, and roughly how long a recovery would take, so a flood, a ransomware incident or a deleted mailbox is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

What is included

  • Image based backup of servers and key workstations, kept locally and offsite
  • Microsoft 365 backup covering mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams
  • Daily monitoring of backup jobs, with failures investigated the same day
  • Scheduled restore tests, with results recorded
  • Retention set to match how your business works and what your insurer or regulator expects
  • A written recovery plan: what gets restored first, where, and by whom
  • Help recovering a file, a mailbox or a whole server when you need it

Who this is for

Any Manitoba business that would struggle to operate without its files, email or accounting system for more than a day. That includes offices with a single server, firms that have moved everything to Microsoft 365, and businesses whose only current backup is a drive someone remembers to plug in.

How it starts

  1. 1A list of where your data lives today and what would hurt most to lose.
  2. 2Backups set up for each of those places, with retention agreed in plain terms.
  3. 3A first full restore test so everyone has seen it work.
  4. 4Ongoing monitoring and scheduled tests, with a short monthly summary.

Common questions

Microsoft already has our email. Is a separate backup needed?

Microsoft keeps your service running but does not guarantee recovery of items deleted or encrypted on your side beyond its short retention windows. A separate backup gives you a copy you control.

How often are backups taken?

It depends on how much work you could afford to redo. Most businesses settle on several times a day for servers and daily for Microsoft 365, and the schedule is written into your plan.

What happens during a ransomware incident?

The recovery plan is followed: affected systems are isolated, clean copies are restored from backups the attacker could not reach, and work resumes in the agreed order.
